1. Whipsnade Zoo

Top 10 ten – Bedfordshire

Whipsnade Zoo

Meet some of the most popular animals that you can expect to encounter on your visit to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and find out facts about the animals, including where they live, what they eat and whether they are endangered in the wild.

Lions, limas, chimps, giraffes, elephants, hippos and a host of other creatures take centre stage during your drive through the safari style Animal Park set in a large chunk of the Bedfordshire countryside. See Californian sealions show off their diving skills in the Splashzone.

Why not take advantage of the summer evening tour – a different and relaxing way to experience the zoo in a car free environment, finishing off with a barbecue and a drink from the bar.
Much of the work here is to research and help these species in their own habitats. Part of the Zoological Society of London, Whipsnade has the strength and depth of expertise not only to care for its creatures in a empathetic and peaceful countryside setting, but also runs conservation and preservation programmes of worldwide significance.

A great Christmas or birthday present for animal lovers is their “zoo-keeper for a day,” experience – see the Whipsnade website for details.

There’s a mini train ride for the kids and a café, restaurant and fast food bar, and gift shop.
