Climb Helvellyn

Grade – Hard. 9.5 Miles/6 hours/Glenridding.

At 3114 feet (950 metres) Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in the Lake District after Scafell Pike and Scafell. It’s the most popular mountain with walkers in the lakes, probably due to the combination of varied routes, spectacular scenery and easy access from main roads to starting points.

It is generally easier to tackle Helvellyn from the west. Turn off the A 592 to Glenridding and follow one of the footpaths. Here you have a choice of approaching the mountain via either Swirral Edge, or Striding Edge – both of which are steep and jagged ridges of rock. They drop down steeply to form the walls of a basin in which sits Red Tarn, the highest tarn (small upland lake) in the Lake District. The eastern approach has the advantage of being a more circular route with more variety. As with all walks of this type, make sure you are properly equipped for the conditions, and take a map.
