Snowdon Mountain Railway

snowdon mountain railway.jpg
At 3560 ft, Mount Snowdon is the highest British mountain outside Scotland. The Snowdon Mountain Railway was completed in 1896, and links Llanberis to the summit cafe and bar, and the highest postbox in the UK!
The 70 year old carriages are pushed up the mountain by an equally ancient steam engine at no faster than 5 miles per hour. Board at Llanberis Station opposite the Royal Victoria Hotel. With a round trip of two hours, the journey provides ample time to see the dramatic peaks and rocky landscape of Snowdonia.

Before you know it you are on top of an impressive viaduct looking down at ancient woodland and passing a cascading waterfall.

Soon the line moves into the open and landscape dotted with homes and farm houses. At Half Way, the steam trains take on water whilst waiting for trains to pass. At this point the train leaves the gentle, fertile bowl of the green valley below and approaches a rock littered, alien landscape that has changed little in more than 10,000 years.

Upon arrival you can trek the remaining distance to the summit, and either catch the train back or walk down the mountain.
